Potential Health Effects

The acute and chronic systemic toxicity in man from exposure to Cupferron-ammonium salt (NPH/NH4) has not been well documented; however, any exposure may constitute a route of absorption.

Inhalation:
May cause irritation to the respiratory tract. Symptoms may include coughing and shortness of breath.
Ingestion:
Toxic. May cause some gastrointestinal disturbances. Animal studies suggest that oral ingestion causes acute systemic effects.
Skin Contact:
Causes irritation to skin. Symptoms include redness, itching, and pain. May be absorbed through the skin with possible systemic effects.
Eye Contact:
Causes irritation, redness, and pain.
Chronic Exposure:
Chronic exposure may occur from inhalation, ingestion or skin absorption. A bioassay was conducted by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) by feeding diets ranging from 0.15 percent to 0.4 percent NPH/ammonium salt to rats and mice. Under conditions of the bioassay, NPH showed dose-related carcinogenic effects. In addition to causing hemangiosarcomas, the primary target organs were the forestomach, liver, auditory sebaceous glands, and the harderian glands.
Aggravation of Pre-existing Conditions:
Persons with pre-existing skin disorders or eye problems, or impaired liver or respiratory function may be more susceptible to the effects of the substance.

4. First Aid Measures

Inhalation:
Remove to fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical attention.
Ingestion:
Induce vomiting immediately as directed by medical personnel. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical attention.
Skin Contact:
Immediately flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes. Get medical attention. Wash clothing before reuse. Thoroughly clean shoes before reuse. Contaminated work clothes should be laundered by individuals who have been informed of the hazards of exposure to this substance.
Eye Contact:
Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, lifting lower and upper eyelids occasionally. Get medical attention immediately.


5. Fire Fighting Measures

Fire:
As with most organic solids, fire is possible at elevated temperatures or by contact with an ignition source. Poisonous gases are produced in fire, including ammonia and nitrogen oxides. Fine dust dispersed in air in sufficient concentrations, and in the presence of an ignition source is a potential dust explosion hazard.

7. Handling and Storage

Keep in a tightly closed container, stored in a cool, dry, ventilated area. Protect against physical damage. A few percent of ammonium carbonate chips are added to the product as a stabilizer. Repeated opening of the container can deplete the ammonium carbonate and reduce the shelf life. Isolate from strong oxidizers and acids. Isolate from incompatible substances. Wear special protective equipment (Sec. 8) for maintenance break-in or where exposures may exceed established exposure levels. Wash hands, face, forearms and neck when exiting restricted areas. Shower, dispose of outer clothing, change to clean garments at the end of the day. Avoid cross-contamination of street clothes. Wash hands before eating and do not eat, drink, or smoke in workplace. Containers of this material may be hazardous when empty since they retain product residues (dust, solids); observe all warnings and precautions listed for the product.

A full-face piece respirator with an ammonia/methylamine cartridge may be worn up to 50 times the exposure limit, or the maximum use concentration specified by the appropriate regulatory agency, or respirator supplier, whichever is lowest. For emergencies or instances where the exposure levels are not known, use a full-facepiece positive-pressure, air-supplied respirator. WARNING: Air-purifying respirators do not protect workers in oxygen-deficient atmospheres.
Skin Protection:
Wear impervious protective clothing, including boots, gloves, lab coat, apron or coveralls, as appropriate, to prevent skin contact. Coveralls should be disposable or laundered freshly every day.
Eye Protection:
Maintain eye wash fountain and quick-drench facilities in work area. Use chemical safety goggles and/or full face shield where dusting or splashing of solutions is possible.

10. Stability and Reactivity

Stability:
Reasonably stable at room temperature under ordinary conditions of use and storage. At temperatures of 40C to 50C, slight decomposition can occur gradually as evidenced by strong organic odor and darkening of color. Advanced decomposition results in oily, dark appearing substance, strong organic odor and formation of some liquids. In a dry state, the free acid form can detonate. Acidic solutions of this material should not be kept or heated.
